i can't imagine wanting to reproduce any of the code in the
Sun JDK.  that wasn't the case with UCB and unix.
i always suspected that both parties had forgotten what the original
code looked like, and where each new bit came from, since there had been
enough turnover on both sides.  consequently each seemed genuinely to believe
that they'd written code that (in fact) the other side -- or even someone else entirely --
had written.
