Since it depends an ggi the Generic Graphical interface which is
currently only available for Linux it may not easily extend beyond the
Linux OS.
But why should one use another OS ;-)

I don't think it does.
One of the main advantages of Java is that it's rather easy
to develop crossplatform GUI's.
It doesnt' matter if you use Windows or Motif, or a Mac, so why should
it matter if one uses Berlin ?
