Problems with kaffe not finding library

I compiled and installed kaffe (v.83), and it installed the dlls in
/usr/local/lib.  When I try to execute the compiler, interpreter, or
appletviewer, I get the message "Can't load library 'libkaffe_vm.so' ". 
The link is fine, ldconfig didn't have a problem with it, and I have
other libs in that dir that their respective executables can find.  Does
anyone have any suggestions for me?
