 No, it does not always exist (at least it didn't for me, or else I
would not have changed the Makefile in that way.)  I think it only
exists if you ./configure in the source tree (I am so used to keeping
my object tree and source tree separate that I didn't take that into
account). You're right, we should test for the Makefile.
