/sw/lib/freetype219/lib/pkgconfig/freetype2.pc

so you just need to add that
directory /sw/lib/freetype219/lib/pkgconfig/ to your PKG_CONFIG_PATH

Assuming you're on ppc-osx, you should also add --with-engine=intrp to
configure, unless you want to help out with the ppc jit port.
