Thank you very much for the patch, it improves things a lot on Cygwin.
The pthreads threading is now useable, and the jit also passes mosts tests.

I've incorporated most of your patch into the CVS now. I've left out
the stackTrace changes, as they seem to be rather invasive, and don't
build on Cygwin with the interpreter engine.

But if you are interested in cleaning them up, and resubmitting
them, I would be happy to merge them in.
