kaffe 0.8.4 - NullPointerException on NeXT/m68k

I managed to build kaffe 0.8.4 okay on my NS 3.3 box, but when I  
try compiling a sample program, I get the following results:

banana-jr% javac Test.java
java.lang.NullPointerException

The test program compiles okay under guavac 0.3, but if I try  
running that binary I get the same error message.

I'm sure I ran into (and solved) this problem before but I can't  
remember how. Advice is hereby solicited.
