"Failed to locate native library" on SunOS 4.1.3

I've tried several versions of Kaffe, 0.10, 1.0b1 with patches from the
mailing list archive, and today's kaffe-snap. I've gotten it to compile, but
when I try to run any Java program (even giving a non-existant file) I get:

Failed to locate native library in path:
        /usr/local/lib:/usr/local/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/openwin/lib

I find this a bit odd, since LD_LIBRARY_PATH is
/usr/local/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/openwin/lib

In /usr/local/lib I have:

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root     staff          18 Jul 15 18:34 libkaffevm.so -> libkaffevm.so.1.00
-rw-r--r--  1 root     staff      927275 Jul 15 18:34 libkaffevm.so.1.00

Any help figuring this out will be appreciated.
