[Kaffe] does anyone care about this jar feature?

It is extremely *useful* in conjunction with the -C option!  This is
how GNU tar works, and thousands system administrators have been
relying *heavily* upon this function for years.  This is perhaps
the pinacle of Unix-style orthogonality of design.  I expect it is
less useful in jar than in tar, in practice at this time, because
jar sees less administrative-style use.  But that may change, as java
takes over the universe.
