How to modify the makefile of kaffe

Dear all,

I need to modify kaffe makefile. My solution is to modify Makefile.in,
then run "configure". This is a little stupid solution, since I need to
modify several places in Makefile.in. 

I guess that it will be more easier to modify Makefile.am, then run 
automake, and then run configure. I tried this, but the resulted
Makefile doesn't work.
