in my case the problem seems to persist. Or better, I restarted make...

and I get the error... at the file that follows

CharToByte is the next after ByteToCher

I think there is really some stupid bug, like a missing reinitialization 
or such


since you also use NetBSD... is gnu-make required? I'm using it but I 
just wanted to know if I could spare it.
