Ran your install in three distributions of Linux/390 on a 9672/R56: Debian, SuSE, RedHat.

In Debian 2.4.17,
  ./configure went fine.
make stopped on stringParsing.c in function pushFrame: Incompatible types in assignment, and in function parseString_private, warnings about passing arg 5 of skipBlock from incompatible pointer type.

In SuSE 2.2.16,
  ./configure went fine.
make stopped on InetAddressImpl.c in function java_net_NativeInetAddressImpl_getHostByAddr0 w/ structure has no member named sin6_scope_id.

In RedHat 2.4.19,
  ./configure went fine.
make stopped on stringParsing.c as above in Debian.
